Having given a great deal of thought to the question of why I do this music thing, all I can come up with is that I can't not do it. It's the only answer to the question that every struggling musician asks him or herself during those many career lows: "Why do I do this to myself?"

There has been music in my home for as long as I can remember. My mother and brother have always been proficient on piano and guitar and whatever musical instruments they happen to pick up. Music just flows out of them effortlessly -- it's really something... I couldn't keep up with them on piano or guitar, so I figured if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. I was the house singer for most of my childhood and eventually decided I wanted to play the bass guitar around age 12.

My first gig on bass was my own Bar Mitzvah, where my brother and I played Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69" to a full house of trapped (and very tolerant) guests. I didn't know how to play at all and just sort of strummed open strings with my thumb... The event was captured on tape and will surely come back to haunt me throughout my life...

That's pretty much the end of the story, or the beginning depending on how you look at it... I've been doing the same thing ever since -- just playing with everyone I can. The names, faces and places have changed, but it feels like the same me doing it. I'd like to think I've gotten a little bit better on my instrument along the way. I've also learned the only six things that I am sure to be completely true in this existence:

1) It's all about balance.

2) Love really is all that matters.

3) The weather changes wherever you go.

4) There's no accounting for taste.

5) You'll never find the time, you have to make the time.

6) Nobody's perfect.
